Experiencing pain as a young lady during puberty is a natural process that must take place in transitioning to a woman. Dysmenorrhea is a medical term used to describe a painful period experienced by women during menstruation. It occurs during the onset of menstruation and it is accompanied by pain in the pelvis region that does last for three days.
Types Of Dysmenorrhea
There are two types of dysmenorrhea that occurs in women. They are;
1. Primary Dysmenorrhea: This occurs as a result of an excessive level of prostaglandins, a hormone that causes the uterus to contract during the menstrual cycle and childbearing.
2. Secondary Dysmenorrhea: This occurs as a result of a disorder in the woman reproductive system like endometriosis, cervical stenosis, and adenomyosis.
Causes Of Dysmenorrhea
Dysmenorrhea is caused as a result of an increasing level of prostaglandins in the walls of the uterus and by diseases that affect the reproductive system of a woman.
The symptoms that are normally associated with dysmenorrhea include;
- Pains in the lower abdomen
- Vomiting and nausea
- Diarrhea and constipation
- Having tender breast and swollen abdomen
5 Ways To Treat Dysmenorrhea.
1. Medications: As soon as you notice bleeding in the lower abdomen, you are expected to take drugs like aspirin, and ibuprofen which will help reduce the pain because of the analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties associated with these drugs as pain killers. Make sure the right prescription is given on drug dosage.
2. Vitamin D: Taking Vitamin D which is a fat-soluble vitamin will help to relieve you of menstrual pain by reducing the inflammation associated with the uterus. Naturally, the body can produce Vitamin D if it is exposed to the sun. You can also derive Vitamin D by eating food that is rich in fatty acid like cheese, egg yolk, soya milk, and salmon.
3. Engage In Exercises
Engaging in exercises like running, skipping, yoga will help get rid of menstrual pain. Doing this will help increase blood circulation and help to get rid of the pain.
4. Apply Heat
You can either take a warm bath or apply a heating pad on the lower back to reduce the pain because the heat will help relax the muscles of the uterus and also make the blood flow easily. To do this, soak a towel in hot water and apply it on the lower abdomen to reduce the pain.
5. Avoid These Foods
During menstruation, it is advised you stay away from food and drinks such as: alcohol, fatty food, salty food, caffeine, carbonated beverages as they cause bloating and water retention that can cause pain. Instead, take warm water mixed with lemon.
