Convulsion is one of the most common neurological conditions in the world. It is estimated that there are at least 65 million people affected by convulsion in the world and most reside in developing countries.

In a survey recorded in Dunukofia Local Government Area of Anambra state, Southeast Nigeria by the Department of Medicine, Neurology Unit, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, Anambra State, Nigeria, they discovered that about 47.8% males and 52.2% females were identified as possibly suffering from convulsion at the initial screening, and estimated a total of 23 million people affected in Nigeria. What Is Convulsion?

A convulsion also called seizure is a health condition that occurs when an individual’s muscles contract wildly. Seizures are usually electrical disturbances in the brain. Causes Of Convulsion

Symptoms Of Convulsion

Convulsions have been known to start with the following symptoms

  • Uncontrolled & fast shaking
  • Difficulties in relaxing
  • Trouble breathing
  • The skin color turns pale
  • The victim hits his / her head during or before the seizure
  • Unconscious for a few minutes
  • Strange movement with the eyeballs (moving to the back of the head)

First Aid For Convulsion

These are the most recommended first aid techniques for a victim of convulsion, that actually work.

  1. Place the victim on the floor and lay the victim on his/her side
  2. Give the victim ample breathing space
  3. Remove everything around the head, chest or neck i.e tie, cap or necklace

Preventing Convulsion
